This elegant cat is a polydactyl, meaning she has a genetic mutation that causes her to have two extra toes on each front paw -- hence her name “Thumbs.” She’s about 6 months old and is a brown/chocolate short-haired tabby. Thumbs is up for keeping you company while you do your household chores -- she walked into a laundromat and decided to take up residency, which is how she ended up at the Leitchfield Animal Shelter, 213 William Thomason Byway. The shelter is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Saturday. For more information on adopting her or any of the other animals there, call 270-230-8839. Shelter workers said she’s very friendly and well-mannered, and gets along with other pets and kids. Polydactyl cats also are commonly known as “Hemmingway cats.” Noted American author Ernest Hemingway had a white polydactyl cat named Snowball.
