  • Temper your views at work

There is fun in rivalry until it becomes trashy.
On Friday, March 30, I enjoyed lunch at local restaurant where employees wore shirts displaying their favorite team, red for Louisville and blue for Kentucky.
After running some errands, I drove by another drive-thru to purchase a take home. When I approached the cashier's window, a young lady was wearing a bright blue shirt which read "Louisville Sucks." I don't care which team one favors, this kind of language is out of line.

  • In defense of politics

    By Lee H. Hamilton
A common insult aimed at someone trying to accomplish something in the public realm these days is to say: “He’s playing politics with the issue.” And if you want to disparage a policy decision? “It was political.” Or dismiss an action as barely worth discussing? “Oh, that’s just politics.”
Bashing politics and politicians may be America’s favorite indoor sport — right up there with bashing Congress. So here’s my question: How do you resolve issues in this country without politics?

  • Drivers can’t take back a wreck but can slow down

    “Slow for the cone zone”
    “Give ‘em a brake”
“Please, slow down. My dad or mom works here.”
“Sweet ride on the safe side”
“Accident free work zone—Violators will be injured”
All of these work zone awareness signs have great meaning if we read what they say.
National Work Zone Safety Week is April 23 - 27.

  • Good news from Cincy

A trip to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital shows Deranne’s brachial plexus injury has completed the biggest developments and now needs strength training. It’s good news because now we can focus on muscle improvements instead of worrying about nerve growth, which is all there. One nerve, they said is complete and normal--on the low side of normal but still normal. It’s a word we weren’t sure we ever would hear regarding her left arm.

  • Legislation to help victims of tornadoes highlights busy next-to-last week in session

With only days remaining in the 2012 Legislative Session, the pace of consideration and approval of bills picked up this past week.
At the top of the list of bills passed in the House is one that offers a tax rebate to those who were greatly impacted by recent tornadoes that struck the Commonwealth.  House Bill 165, of which I am a proud co-sponsor, provides individuals and businesses in the 21 counties declared Federal disaster areas from the February 29th and March 2nd storms to receive a refund on the sales tax charged on building supplies.

  • Thank goodness it’s finally warm outside

Summer is the delight of children and parents alike. It’s the perfect time to throw those kids outside and let them get dirty! While they are busy in the sand or the mud or the grass and anything else that leaves a stain, a mother can sit in a quiet house with her thoughts or watch a great movie in the quiet or even enjoy a hobby such as playing the piano without little fingers helping with chorus line.

  • McConnell talks about Kentucky's college basketball

“Something very special in the world of sports is happening in my home State of Kentucky.

“Kentucky is well known as the home to the Kentucky Derby, often called the greatest two minutes in sports.

“But this coming Saturday, March 31, we will witness one of the greatest moments in Kentucky’s sports history.
