  • GCHS academic team takes Pennyrile tourney

    The 2010 Pennyrile Academic Association Quick Recall Tournament was Dec. 18 at Owensboro Community and Technical College. Grayson County High School won the event for the second straight year, among eight of the 15 teams in the association.
    Scott Blain of Grayson County was awarded the Ora Nall MVP Award that honors the memory of the late Apollo High School U.S. history teacher, long-time quick recall official and ardent supporter of academic competition.

  • Filing FAFSA early gives students better chance at state grants

    Kentucky students who plan to attend an in-state college or university beginning in fall 2011 should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after January 1. Filing early increases the student’s chance of receiving a state need-based grant administered by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA). The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

  • Students win lottery without buying a ticket

    Students in Western Kentucky last year received more than $41 million in college scholarships and grants paid for by Kentucky Lottery proceeds. This is according to new figures from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority. These funds were used to award more than 27,000 scholarships and grants to Western Kentucky students.

    Statewide, more than $189.4 million in Kentucky Lottery proceeds paid for more than 122,700 scholarships and grants awarded during the 2010 fiscal year.

  • Local student accepted to Louisville college

    Sullivan University accepted Sable Burden, Grayson County High School in Leitchfield for admission to the University beginning in the 2011 academic year.

  • Byrd Scholarships seeking applicants

    The Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) will be accepting applications for Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarships through Feb. 1, 2011. Students who will graduate from a Kentucky high school or earn a diploma through a home school program during the 2010-2011 academic year are eligible to apply. The scholarships are worth up to $1,500 a year for four years of college.

  • Local teachers give national presentation

    Fifth-grade social studies teachers Michelle Galloway, Allison Helm and Kristin Pierce recently presented a program about incorporate 21st century skills into history curriculum to a group of their colleagues at the National Council for Social Studies conference in Denver, Colo.
    This presentation grew out of a $1 million Teaching American History grant awarded in 2008 to the Green River Regional Education Cooperation by the U.S. Department of Education.

  • Graduates from college

    Rachel Armstrong-Abney will graduate cum laude with a degree of bachelor of science in Family and Consumer Sciences from Eastern Kentucky University on Saturday, Dec. 18.
    She is the daughter of Kay and Warren Barton and Terry and Rose Armstrong of Leitchfield.
    She is a 2006 graduate of Grayson County High School.

  • Pay attention to scholarship, admission deadlines

    High school seniors should pay close attention to application deadlines for college admissions and financial aid. Here are some tips from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA):
    If you have not yet chosen a college, narrow your list by visiting schools, comparing colleges on www.kheaa.com and talking with your counselor and your parents.
    If you have not yet done so, talk with teachers about writing recommendations. It is also time to complete your admissions essay if you need to write one.
