  • Emergency grazing, haying may be allowed on CRP land

    The USDA Farm Service Agency has announced the opportunity for Conservation Reserve Program participants to request authorization to conduct emergency haying or grazing on specific CRP acres. Authorization is based on a U.S. Drought Monitor designation of D2 or higher for Grayson County on Aug. 2.

  • Agriculture Commissioner to discuss drought on Fox business program

    Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James Comer will talk about the effects of the recent drought in Kentucky and throughout the Midwest on a national television business program.

    Commissioner Comer will appear on the Fox Business program “MONEY with Melissa Francis” July 25 at 1:30 p.m. EDT.

  • Master Gardeners bring Karen Angelucci to speak

    The Master Gardeners Association of Grayson County will host Kentucky author and Master Gardener Karen Angelucci on Aug. 9.
    Angelucci will discuss her book “Secrets of a Kentucky Gardener” at the Grayson County Extension office. The event begins at 6 pm. and desserts will be served.

  • Hot, dry weather continues as corn begins to pollinate

    With much of the state’s corn crop either beginning to or preparing to enter pollination, the weather continues to be hot and dry.
    According to the June 25 Kentucky Weekly Crop and Weather Report, 29 percent of the state’s corn crop has entered the silking stage and 50 percent has reached tasseling.

  • From the garden: Cabbage tops 17 pounds

    Kennadi Walters grew a 17.5 pound cabbage for a class project at Clarkson Elementary School.

    It was 48.5 inches in diameter. Kennadi is competing against other Kentucky students for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship.

  • From the garden: Zuchini eighs more than eight pounds

    An 8.5 pound zucchini went unnoticed in Tina and Donald Warren’s garden until June 21.

    Neither had planted zucchini this year and they were not looking for the green vegetable that is often harvested at eight- to nine-inches long. This zucchini, however, grew to 15 inches and weighed 8.5 pounds, the same as their granddaughter Hannah weighed when she was born. The plant grew from a tilled patch under the Warren’s shed, where their garden was last year.

  • The 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey about to begin

    Beginning next week, horse owners across Kentucky could be some of 15,000 “horse-holds” selected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Ag Statistics Service to contribute critically important information about Kentucky’s horse industry. Organizers urge those receiving a survey in the mail to promptly complete and return the information.

  • FSA loss assistance program accepting applications through June 1

    The Supplemental Revenue Assistance Program (SURE), which provides benefits for farm revenue losses, application period will end June 1.
    Losses due to natural disasters that occurred during the 2010 crop year may be eligible. SURE is available to eligible producers on:
    • Farms in counties with Secretarial disaster declarations, including contiguous counties, that have incurred crop production or quality losses of at least 10 percent or both, and includes all crops grown by a producer nationwide, except grazed crops.
