  • America enjoys many blessings

Question: “Is America the blessed nation mentioned in Psalm 33:12?”

Answer: It would be disgraceful and dishonest for the United States of America to ever say it has not been blessed by God Almighty. But the passage in Psalms was written a thousand years before Christ and refers to Israel the people chosen to represent God on earth.

  • Graduation provides chance for introspection

It was my honor recently to bring the first graduation address for the Leitchfield Christian Academy, which was founded during my ministry there. My message began with some remarks from the late Sir Winston Churchill made some years ago at a Yale commencement where he followed a Yale alumnus who was receiving an honorary degree. The alumnus had elaborated extensively about the university with each letter of “YALE” a point in his speech.

  • Memorial Day: It's about remembering

Recently we received an e-mail titled, “Preparing for Memorial Day,” which was a series of thought-provoking serious cartoons about this event.

One depicted a young boy giving thanks at a meal with the caption, “Thanksgiving is a day when we pause to give thanks for the things we have; Memorial Day is a day when we pause to give thanks for the people who fought for the things we have.”

  • A mother's place in today's culture

God's woman in today's world was a concern for Paul as he writes to Titus (2:1-5). Because of the amount of time and space Paul devotes to the role of the woman in the home, it seems clear he strongly believed the woman was the most important person in making the home what it ought to be. Before we let Mother's Day slip from us for another year, let's consider what Paul says to and about mothers.

  • Devil and demons have place in eternity

Question: “Will the Devil and demons also be in Heaven?” Terry.

Answer: Satan used to be in heaven when he was called the angel Lucifer, son of the morning, until his pride caused his demotion (Isaiah 14) and he was cast out. It was at this time he lead a rebellion in that spiritual realm where one third of the angels following him were also tossed out of heaven destine for hell (Revelation 12). These fallen angels seem to be the demons loose on earth.

  • Why not shout about miracles?

Question: “Why does the Gospel of Mark record Jesus instructing people not to tell anybody else what He did for them.” – Jonathan

Answer: It does seem illogical for Jesus to tell people not to tell anybody about the effect He was having on people’s lives when He wanted everybody to know Him.  Yet that is what He says in Mark, 8:30. All four Gospels state this in some way but the writings of Mark mention it the most. In theological studies it is referred to as the “Messianic Secret.”

  • Walking in newness of life

What a joy to listen to former major league baseball player Darryl Strawberry share how Jesus Christ had made such a change in his life. He unashamedly spoke of his relationship with Christ on Huckabee’s Fox News television program last Saturday. Darryl played with several major league teams, including the New York Yankees. He had a long struggle with drugs.

  • Is it OK to repeat a prayer?

Question:  “Does Matthew 6: 7-8 mean we should not pray the same prayer twice?” Verma.

Answer:  Some people try to use this verse to excuse their lack of praying at all but they miss the point. Jesus warned His followers not to vainly repeat a set of words and expect God to hear it simply because you say them over and over again. That was how some heathen prayed in that day. They expected to earn power from their gods through special incantations.

  • Being a Barnabas

If someone were to write your biography, could they write it in 24 words and it have the meaning as what was said of Barnabas? In the New Living Translation we read, “Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in faith and large numbers of people were brought to the Lord” (Acts 11:24). What a wonderful tribute to Barnabas and a good life.
