A Caneyville woman is facing multiple criminal charges after fleeing police and attempting to smuggle contraband into the Grayson County Detention Center, according to police.
According to Leitchfield Police Detective Kevin Smith, officers tried to serve Mercedes L. Goldsmith, 26, Feb. 8 with an outstanding arrest warrant for failure to pay fines.
She initially fled from officers, but was found a short time later and arrested, Smith said.
Officers took Goldsmith to the Grayson County Detention Center for booking, Smith said. While she was undergoing an intake search jail employees observed what appeared to be contraband “hidden in her private area.”
Goldsmith was taken to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center where the contraband — several grams of suspected methamphetamine — was removed.
In addition to the original charge, she now faces counts of second-degree fleeing or evading police; promoting contraband, tampering with physical evidence; possession of drug paraphernalia, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first degree trafficking in a controlled substance and trafficking in a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school.
She was being held in the detention center on $10,000 bond late Tuesday.
