Reverend Martin E. Hayes, 53, of Rome died suddenly on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at St. Martins Church Rectory.
Father Hayes attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minn., St. Pius X Seminary in Erlanger, and Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md. He was ordained by Bishop John McRaith on June 2, 1984. Father Hayes was a state friar of the Knights of Columbus. He has been associate pastor at Blessed Mother Parish, St. Joseph and Paul parishes in Owensboro, pastor at St. Edward in Fulton, Sacred Heart in Hickman, St. Jude in Clinton, St. William, and St. Lawrence, both in Knottsville, St. Paul in Leitchfield, St. Elizabeth’s in Clarkson, and St. Martin Parish in Rome.
He is survived by his mother, Patricia Kern Hayes of Cloverport; four brothers, Bernie (Pam) Hayes of Hartford, Hilary Hayes of Smithfield, David (Helen) Hayes of Cloverport, Stanley (Michelle) Hayes of New Haven; four sisters, Ruth (Ron) Wiles of Lexington, N.C., Mary (Jeff) Blanton of New Albany, Ind., Emily (Jim) McCarty of Louisville, Margaret (Ken) Annunziata of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Hayes; and a brother, Tom Hayes.
The funeral was Saturday, July 14 at St. Rose Catholic Church in Cloverport with burial at Calvary Cemetery.
Burns Funeral Home in Cloverport was in charge of arrangements.
