Old Brandenburg Road

Old Brandenburg Road is a quaint street in Leitchfield. It's claim to fame is a railroad crossing that is steep on both sides, leading to several calls of semi-trailers stuck on the tracks. Railroad officials have requested the city to close the crossing several times but they have not agreed to do so.

The crossing should be closed as requested.

When approaching the tracks, motorists can't see what is on the other side of the tracks until they are about to cross. Residents in the area know about the steep approach and descent, but visitors do not and can be surprised by the road.

As explained in the city council meeting on March 21, a train derailment for whatever reason could be detrimental to the county and this crossing leads to more concern than others due to its steep grade and history of vehicles getting stuck. Local emergency responders do not use the crossing with large vehicles.

Residents on the north side of the crossing can use Embry Street to access Brandenburg Road. It might be necessary for some residents to  change their driving habits if the crossing is closed but the amount of time to redirect is minimal compared to an increase in safety for the residents.
