Helping Santa's helpers

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies are asking for the community’s help in making Christmas merry for some area families.
Sheriff’s deputies, the Leitchfield Police Department, the Kentucky State Police and officers from other agencies join forces each year for the “Shop with a Cop” program.
Sheriff Norman Chaffins said that in 2016 the program raised $8,000 and was able to shop for 45 children.
“We are setting that as our goal this year,” he said.
Selected children will be accompanied by officers for a shopping trip to the Leitchfield Walmart SuperCenter on Dec. 16, and will be treated to pizza afterward.
“The officers and volunteers have as much fun, if not more, than the kids do during this time and after 23 years of shopping with the kids, I have seen many success stories,” Chaffins said. “It never gets old.”
Besides making sure the children have holiday gifts, the program aims to impact their futures. “This program gives underprivileged kids the opportunity to see the police in a positive way rather than us responding to their home,” Leitchfield Police Chief Bryan Langdon said.
The program is funded through donations, which can be dropped off at the sheriff’s office or the police department, or mailed to Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, 44 Public Square, Leitchfield, KY 42754.
“All donations are greatly appreciated,” Chaffins said.
