Grayson County and the City of Leitchfield have proclaimed Fiddle Week for July 15-21, culminating with the county's first ever National Fiddle Championship which begins at 10 a.m. July 21.
The festival will feature competitions for fiddle players from 0-8 years, 8-12, 13-17, 18-39, 40-64 and 65 and up. Dancing competition will be for 0-16, 17-40 and 41 and up.
Several special awards will be presented at the festival including The Herman Alvey Award for the senior fiddle, The Bud Meredith Showmanship Award, The Leo Mudd Citizenship Award, The Jodie Hall Award and The Lonnie Peerce Award to a Blue Grass Band.
The fiddle off will begin at 7 p.m. with Rocky Top Revue Square Dance Show before and Bluegrass Band competition afterward. The Jack Thomas Band will perform after the contest.
Master of Cermonies for the championship is Kevin Mudd. The contest will pay the top five places in each category with more than $4,500 in prize money. For information visit www.twinlakesfiddler.com or search Facebook for KYFiddlerContest.
The resolution states "fiddling and fiddle music have played an important part of the history of Leitchfield and Grayson County and that players from teh area have traveled all over the country and world promoting music and have brought many accolades and national and international recognition to the people of Leitchfield and Grayson County."
"These skilled musicians have served as role models and musical ambassadors to young and old alike, preserving our traditions and music for generations to come and our community has a rich tradition of fiddling and fiddle music and is recognized as a major contribution in the preservation of this music.
